The OVP HEALTH Difference: Our CORE VALUES
From the very beginning of OVP HEALTH nearly 25 years ago, Dr. Robert Hess and Dr. Stephen Shy were committed to building their company on a solid foundation of four Core Values – Family, Community, Quality, and Integrity. And to this day, every decision the company makes, and every step the company takes, is guided by those Core Values, which we consider to be the essence of the OVP HEALTH brand.
At OVP HEALTH, these four Core Values are far from platitudes. As you’ll see in the video above, they’re not only our road map for doing business every day, but also a major point of distinction between our company and others in the industry.
Family
OVP HEALTH is proud to be a family-owned company. We hold ourselves to the highest standards – the family values that are passed from generation to generation. However, at OVP HEALTH, we also believe that our co-workers, our patients, and our community are family. That means we will always treat you like family, no matter what health struggle you’re facing.
Community
At OVP HEALTH, we believe in giving back. And our Commitment to improving the communities we serve doesn’t stop at providing high-quality medical care. After work and on weekends, OVP HEALTH employees can be found volunteering in the community. And we are proud to support a long list of non-profit groups in the areas we serve.
Quality
In an ever-changing health care industry, our commitment to consistent, high-quality care has been the same since Day One. Our highly trained physicians and advanced practice providers are constantly striving to provide the latest, evidence-based care and treatment to patients. In everything we do, our goal is to provide patients and their loved ones with the highest level of care possible.
Integrity
Ethical, responsible health care is a non-negotiable at OVP HEALTH. We treat our co-workers, our patients, and our communities with honesty, trust, and respect, and hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. Earning trust and loyalty is our greatest reward.
“Family is Number One for us. It always has been. Every doctor I interview who goes to work for us, I tell them that the most important thing to me is that you treat people right; you treat people with respect; you are nice to patients, their families, and staff. You treat them as you wound a member of your family.”

Stephen C. Shy II, DO
Co-owner, Medical Director of Emergency Services
“Anything we do is based on those Core Values. We want to treat patients like family. We want to be an integral part of every community that we’re in. As I’ve said many times, we want people in our communities to be able to say, ‘We’re better because OVP HEALTH is here’.”

Stacey Shy
Chief Executive Office, OVP HEALTH
“We don’t just come to the hospital. We come to the community. We try to find providers locally in the community. We try to find administration locally in the community, as well as give back to that community in which we’re serving our patients.”

Jonathan A. Hess, MD
Emergency Physician, Co-Owner, Medical Director of Addiction Services
“We strive to provide the best quality care every day. And what we know in medicine is that the best quality today is not necessarily the best quality six months from now. So, we stay on top of that and make sure we’re supporting our providers and working with our facilities to provide the latest, most evidence-based, highest quality of care that our patients and communities deserve.”

Thomas Rittinger, MD
Chief Medical Officer & Director of Hospital Medicine, OVP HEALTH
“They have been instrumental in helping us with our sepsis protocols and reducing our infection rates, whether it’s C-difficile, central line associated infections, or catheter-associated infections. They’ve been very responsive and helpful in developing protocols that address each of those situations.”

Rodney Stout, MD
Chief Medical Officer, Holzer Health System
“One of the things we’re most proud of is our compliance with the CMS Sepsis Compliance Bundle. We had an 85% compliance rate. That is phenomenal, and it is 100 percent attributable to the engagement of the OVP HEALTH physicians in our Emergency Department and inpatient units.”

Wendy Elliot
Chief Executive Officer, OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center
“For us, integrity means that if we tell you we’re going to do something, we are going to do it. And I think our providers and partner hospitals would certainly echo those sentiments, in that we’re not perfect, and we don’t claim perfection, but we do claim partnership, which just means we’re in it together. So, if we tell you something, we’ll go to the ends of the earth to get it done.”

Curtis Collins
Director of Provider Recruitment, OVP HEALTH
Our Values in Action
It’s not enough to just say your company treats people like family, and that it’s committed to giving back to the community. To be a company of quality and integrity, your actions need to match your words.
Last year, OVP HEALTH employees let their actions do the talking by working more than 2,700 hours in service to their communities. And this year, they’re on pace to do even more.
One of the most satisfying service efforts our employees have embraced is partnering with local food banks to help purchase and distribute much-needed food supplies to families dealing with food insecurity.
As you’ll see in the video to the left, this effort has not only benefitted thousands of people in OVP HEALTH’s service areas but has given employees a profound opportunity to show how much they care for their patients and communities.
